New Delhi: Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel, Shri H.D. Kumaraswamy, inaugurated SIAM’s 4th Global Electrification Mobility Summit (GEMS) at Bharat Mandapam, emphasizing India’s commitment to sustainable mobility and the transformative power of electrification.
Delivering his address, Kumaraswamy highlighted the theme of the summit, “Electrification for Sustainable Growth,” as a reflection of India’s ambition to lead the world in green transportation. “India stands at a transformative juncture, where progress must align with planetary health. Our automobile sector, contributing 7% to GDP, is at the forefront of this revolution, driven by innovation and ecological stewardship,” he remarked.
The Minister commended SIAM for hosting the summit at a critical juncture when global priorities are shifting towards greener and sustainable mobility. He acknowledged the role of government policies, such as the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes and the FAME-II initiative, in paving the way for India’s leadership in the electric vehicle (EV) sector.
Advancing Atmanirbhar Bharat
Underlining the government’s efforts, Kumaraswamy credited the PLI Scheme for Automobile and Auto Components as a game-changer, with an impressive ₹25,938 crore outlay. He revealed, “The scheme has attracted significant investments and already generated over 28,884 jobs, making it a cornerstone of Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji’s vision of ‘Excellence through Atmanirbharta.’”
The Minister also highlighted the PLI Scheme for Advanced Cell Chemistry (ACC), which, with a budget of ₹18,100 crore, is bolstering India’s battery manufacturing capabilities. “We are incentivizing domestic and global players to establish a competitive ACC battery setup in India, ensuring we build a robust EV ecosystem,” he noted.
Success of FAME-II and PM E-DRIVE
Discussing the success of the FAME-II Scheme, Kumaraswamy shared that over 1.6 million EVs have been incentivized and nearly 11,000 public EV charging stations sanctioned under the program. “FAME-II has significantly reduced the upfront cost for buyers and enhanced charging infrastructure, accelerating the transition to sustainable mobility,” he said.
He also introduced the PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) Scheme, a comprehensive initiative launched to boost EV adoption, charging infrastructure, and manufacturing. The scheme includes subsidies for e-2Ws, e-3Ws, e-ambulances, e-trucks, and e-buses. “With PM E-DRIVE, we are fostering investment and innovation in the EV sector, bringing India closer to its net-zero goals,” Kumaraswamy stated.
Vision for India’s EV Future
Kumaraswamy reiterated the government’s focus on creating a self-reliant and globally competitive EV industry. “Our consistent policy interventions aim to localize the entire EV value chain and transform India into a global hub for electric vehicle manufacturing,” he affirmed.
The Minister called upon stakeholders, including manufacturers, innovators, and policymakers, to collaborate and create mobility solutions tailored to India’s unique needs. “Unified in purpose, we have the power to place India at the forefront of sustainable transportation and green innovation,” he emphasized, urging SIAM members to drive this mission forward.
Kumaraswamy concluded with a call to action: “Let’s build a cleaner, greener, and more efficient transportation system, propelling India toward a net-zero future. Together, we can achieve Hon’ble Prime Minister Modi Ji’s vision of a Viksit Bharat by 2047.”
The summit, attended by industry leaders, policymakers, and global experts, serves as a platform for advancing the dialogue on sustainable and electrified mobility, further strengthening India’s position as a global leader in green transportation.
