Thiruvananthapuram – Kerala has once again demonstrated its commitment to holistic healthcare, with awareness and adoption of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy) practices significantly surpassing the national average. In a detailed report presented by the Health Minister, the state’s unique blend of tradition and modernity was credited for its leadership in integrating traditional medicine into public health systems.
The report revealed that over 65% of Kerala’s population is well-informed about AYUSH practices, compared to a national average of 45%. The Health Minister attributed this success to the state’s historical connection to Ayurveda and its comprehensive efforts to promote traditional healthcare.
“Tradition Meets Modernity”
Speaking at the press conference, the minister emphasized Kerala’s return to its cultural roots. “Kerala has always been a torchbearer of traditional medicine. We are now witnessing a resurgence of these practices as people increasingly recognize their relevance in preventive and holistic healthcare,” he said.
The state government has prioritized the integration of AYUSH into mainstream healthcare. Key initiatives include:
- AYUSH in Primary Healthcare: Over 1,000 primary health centers in Kerala now offer AYUSH treatments, ensuring accessibility to rural and urban populations alike.
- School Programs: Awareness campaigns in schools educate children about the benefits of Ayurveda, yoga, and other traditional practices, fostering a culture of wellness from an early age.
- Public Awareness Campaigns: State-funded campaigns promote the use of certified AYUSH practitioners and dispel myths about traditional medicine.
A Global Wellness Hub
Kerala’s reputation as a global destination for Ayurvedic tourism has played a significant role in increasing awareness. The state attracts thousands of international visitors annually, seeking treatments ranging from stress relief therapies to chronic disease management. This international exposure has further encouraged residents to explore and trust traditional medicine.
Challenges in Standardization and Misuse
While the report highlighted Kerala’s achievements, the minister acknowledged several challenges:
- Standardization of Practices: Ensuring uniformity and scientific validation of AYUSH treatments remains a priority.
- Public Trust and Misuse: The proliferation of unregulated practitioners and products has created misconceptions. The government is addressing this by licensing qualified professionals and ensuring the quality of medicines.
- Research and Development: There is a need for more investment in research to provide evidence-based support for AYUSH practices.
Future Plans for AYUSH Integration
Kerala is now focusing on strengthening research collaborations with institutions worldwide. Plans include setting up advanced AYUSH research centers and leveraging technology to enhance diagnostic and treatment processes. Additionally, the government aims to expand wellness tourism by offering integrated packages that combine traditional therapies with modern medical care.
A Model for the Nation
Kerala’s approach to AYUSH highlights the potential of traditional medicine in addressing modern health challenges. By seamlessly blending heritage with science, the state has positioned itself as a model for the rest of India and the world.
“Kerala is not just preserving its traditions but proving how they can coexist with innovation to improve lives,” the minister concluded.
This report underscores Kerala’s leadership in not just healthcare delivery but also in safeguarding cultural heritage, setting a benchmark for sustainable and inclusive health systems.
