New Delhi:Bengaluru has emerged as a global hub for Information Technology (IT) and Biotechnology (BT), making seamless connectivity essential. Recognizing this need, former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda strongly advocated for the construction of a second airport for the city.
Speaking in the Rajya Sabha today, Deve Gowda emphasized that the Karnataka government has already submitted a proposal for another airport. “The state government has discussed this matter with the Union Civil Aviation Minister, and considering Bengaluru’s rapid expansion and Karnataka’s development, an additional airport is a necessity,” he stated.
“The Centre must prioritize the construction of a second airport in Karnataka. The international airport that I approved during my tenure is now struggling to handle the massive passenger traffic. Therefore, another airport is essential for Bengaluru,” he added.

Supporting Deve Gowda’s statement, Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu acknowledged the increasing congestion at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport.
“Yes, we all agree that Bengaluru’s airport is facing heavy passenger traffic. The Karnataka government has expressed its intent to build another airport in the city. If the state government identifies a suitable location and submits the proposal for approval, the Centre will respond positively,” the Minister assured.
